Week 7

Content

  • Leadership and Team Development

Teams are now the focus of performance in healthcare organizations today. Teams represent the dominant way that work gets done in healthcare. No one works in isolation. Clinical and administrative work in this environment is far too complex for a single entity.  Positive patient outcomes are dependent on the involvement and cohesiveness of team performance. However, bringing a team together and expecting them to start performing right off the bat is unreasonable and unrealistic. Teams require strong leaders with solid team-building, communication, problem-solving, and conflict skills.

    Objectives this Week

By the end of this week you will be able to:

    • Explain the stages of team development using the Tuckman model.
    • Diagnose a team’s developmental stage and identify the leadership response it calls for.
    • Analyze the leadership competencies that multidisciplinary healthcare teams require.
    • Assess team performance in relation to patient outcomes.
  • Content in Context

Leaders need to understand how teams develop and work together. The focus of the readings and videos this week is on leadership and team development. One model for understanding teams and teamwork is the Tuckman model. This model explains team development as teams moving through five distinct stages of team development (Bonebright, 2010). Leaders can use these stages of development to identify where teams are in terms of their development and to help diagnose problems. Finally, multidisciplinary teams are very common in healthcare settings. Given the importance of these team members working well together, assessing their performance is vital (Sutton, Liao, Jimmieson, & Restubog, 2011).

  • Multidisciplinary teams are very prevalent in healthcare settings. What kind of leadership is necessary to lead a multidisciplinary team? Do self-directed, high-performing teams even need a leader? Use information from this week’s reading assignments as well as other research to support your opinions.

First, view this demo on multidisciplinary teams. Answer the question at the end of the demo and print or save the article. You may use this article in your assignment this week if you like.

You should use a real-life situation or team to base your assignment. This may include a team that you are leading or one in which you are a member. Remember, no one works by themselves in healthcare. You are a part of some team. Your assignment this week should address the following issues related to multidisciplinary teams in your organization:

    1. Description and make-up of the team
      1. Number of team members
      2. Departments or specialties
      3. If applicable, is the patient a member of the interdisciplinary team? Why or why not?
    2. Purpose and/or goals for the team
      1. Does the team have a clear purpose and/or goals?
      2. Critique how the purpose, or lack thereof, impacts team performance
    3. How does the team communicate?
    4. How is team performance measured? (You may want to ask the leader or member of the team. Remember to include a personal communication citation, per APA)
    5. Is this a permanent or ad hoc team?
    6. How would you characterize the leader’s style, if there is a leader?
